當地時間16日晚間7點54分、也就是台北時間17日上午6點54分，智利中部外海發生了芮氏規模8.3的強震，根據美國地質研究所公佈的數據，地震震央位於沿海地帶，距離首都聖地牙哥北北西方約233公里，深度為25公里左右，在主震過後的半小時內餘震不斷，其中兩次規模分別達到6.3和6.4。
CNN氣象主播賈瓦希里：「（震央）離岸只有25公里左右，這次地震當然帶來了海嘯的威脅，也同樣有強烈的搖晃威脅，整片區域都有相當劇烈的震感。」
由於震央靠近沿岸，也引發了海嘯的可能，位於夏威夷的太平洋海嘯警報中心，對智利、祕魯、厄瓜多等國沿岸，發出了嚴防危險海嘯的警戒，智利當局也發出了海嘯警報，呼籲民眾保持冷靜、儘速撤離到安全的場所。
地震後1小時內，港口城市科金博已經觀測到4.6公尺的巨浪，根據當地國營電視台的報導，低窪地區的道路已經被淹沒，民宅開始浸水，就連路樹也被沖走，甚至還傳出死傷的不幸消息。
聲音來源:NHK主播引述日本氣象廳：「因為芮氏規模8.3的巨大地震，讓廣泛太平洋地區有被海嘯波及的可能，對日本將帶來的影響，目前還在進行數據分析與調查的階段。」
太平洋海嘯警報中心預測，海嘯預計在18日清晨5點多，分別抵達北海道釧路市，和千葉縣勝浦市沿岸，目前對日本帶來的影響還在分析中，不過沿岸地區也不能掉以輕心。（民視新聞綜合報導）
